A large and intricate boulder stone, made in the 20th century (I don’t know exactly when). I think It is made from some sort of paste - it is very heavy.
Scholars carved boulders were usually made from Jade, soapstone or something coloured like turquoise or lapis lazuli. They are incredibly desirable objects that must have taken immense amounts of time to make and understandably can sell for huge amounts of money. This contemporary version may not have the beautiful colour variations and character of natural stone, but it is still a very attractive and interesting item (and much more affordable!)
This was very dirty when we acquired it, and almost looked as though it had been buried. The dirt was ground into the carving and although I have done my best to clean it all off there is some still remaining in hard to reach crevices. Other than the areas of dirt, it is in excellent condition with no damage that I can see.
This item has devided opinion here at Antique and Unique - me and my mum both love it, my dad hates it, so it may be a bit of a ‘marmite’ item! I think it would look fantastic in a pigeonhole type display shelf. The colour is a really vibrant turquoise and stands out against either light or dark backgrounds.
It stands 21.5cm high and is approximately 17.5cm wide and 8cm deep.
