This early 18th century oak bureau is fairly simple in design and is nicely made. The interior has a secret compartment inside the well, and at the back of each of the little side drawers - the cover above the drawer slides out and then the hidden compartment can be accessed once the drawer is removed. They have a wooden ‘spring’ on the back to make them pop out easily. The fall front has three pierced brass escutcheons - the middle one and the right hand one have had locks (the right hand lock is missing) so the left hand escutcheon must have been added for aesthetic reasons only. The handles and escutcheons are replacements though look as though they have been there for a considerable length of time. The escutcheon on the bottom drawer doesn't match the other escutcheon and handles.

Condition: There are some ink stains to the interior and exterior. As mentioned above the handles are not original, and the two smaller drawers have two holes where the original handles would have been. The sliding cover above the left hand internal drawer has a slit in it and is a little difficult to remove and replace, so needs wriggling around a bit. The bureau is very solid and is fully useable and overall is in excellent condition.

Dimenions:

Width - 90.5cm across the trim at the bottom, 86.5cm excluding the trim.

Depth - 51cm

Height - 99.5cm
