Antique Indian Metal Pandan Betel Box

£159.00

A highly decorative Indian patinated metal round box with domed lid, hinged to the body with chain links, a clasp on the front and a swing handle to the top. I believe this to be a Pandan or Betel Nut box, but it could also be a chapati box.

Paan is a paste of various spices in a betel leaf, which is chewed for its stimulant effects, and has many variations. After chewing it is either spat out or swallowed. Slaked lime (chunnam) paste is commonly added to bind the leaves. Originally this box would have had several pots that fitted neatly inside to hold the various components of the paan.

It is a very attractive item, and beautifully decorated throughout. It is in good condition with a few dints and areas of wear, but nothing of real note.

The box measures 21cm in diameter and 14.5cm tall.
